Down The California Coast

Two weekends ago we headed out on a new family adventure. We drove south, first stopping in Malibu to check out the tide pools at Leo Carrillo State Park (35000 Pacific Coast HWY, Malibu, CA 90265). The view and life out there was awesome. We were disappointed to learn that the California starfish population was decimated a few years ago by disease, so unfortunately we didn't have any starfish sightings. We got to check out a bunch of crabs and fish, though. A great destination for families to have some fun, just make sure you check the tide times before you go, as the tide does roll in very quickly.

At noon, we continued on to Neptune's Net, for lunch (42505 Pacific Coast HWY, Malibu, CA 90265). The restaurant is fairly small compared to the amount of business it gets. You pretty much just have to search for a seat before you order food, since the tables are first come, first serve. Then someone from your party can get in line and order. Once they call out your number, you go up and grab your food. For the amount of people that were there on a Saturday, the service was fairly good. It took us maybe ten minutes or so to get our food after ordering.

After Lunch, we drove further south, headed down to the boardwalk at Venice Beach. The traffic through Santa Monica was absolutely horrid, and finding parking was worse. In the end, we paid for valet at a parking lot right off the beach. Thirty-five bucks seems like a lot, and it felt like it, but it is way better than walking in the sun or ending up with a ticket (the entire area is pay parking, so don't think you'll get away with parking on a side street without ending up with a ticket). The boardwalk is amazing too, but super crowded.

They have a few cool performance shows during the day, most which ask for donations at the end, since it's what they do for a living. There are tons of shops, restaurants, stands, and medical marijuana offices all along the boardwalk, but what really fascinated me was all the artwork. They have a bunch of graffiti walls and some of the artwork out there is quite amazing.

I've lived in California my whole life, yet I still find new places to explore and beauty for the wandering soul. A much recomended trip
